Ensuring hassle-free transport facilities to the milling masses of the metropolitan city, the Centre has recently cleared a mega rail transport project at an investment of Rs. 52,000 crore. The project has been aimed at meeting the demands of the ever-growing commuter traffic due to the rapid urbanization of the city and will be built in a phased manner.
Other projects comprise a 46.6 km fast tracked corridor from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Panvel, with a connection to the proposed new Navi Mumbai International Airport and will be extended upto the Harbour Line to Borivali, and multiple additional tracks. In order to complete the project, Indian Railways has taken steps to mobilize resources over and above the available budgetary resources to fast track execution. It is worth mentioning here that the Centre has recently cleared a staggering sum of Rs. 10, 947 crore so as to commission the mega project as quickly as possible. These projects will be undertaken on central, western and harbor railway lines carrying over 7.6 million passengers in Greater Mumbai and its suburbs per day.
